2017 Goal Setting – Be SMART

As we embark into the New Year, some of you will be happy to see 2016 fade away, enthusiastically looking forward to the unknown of 2017. Others may be optimistic, but also facing new challenges ahead, not knowing what to expect, or, what the New Year holds.

No matter what 2017 will mean to you; it’s always important to reflect on the past year, grab a sheet of paper or start taping away at your keyboard and write down what went well and what may need some extra attention. We all can improve, be better, make some changes and work towards a happier healthier you. Attitude is everything; you also need to give yourself permission to start with a clean slate for the New Year.

So what does 2017 hold for you, what chapters will close and which doors will you open? Get yourself ready and write down your 2017 goals! Whatever the future holds, here are 5 things that should keep you focused:

Make sure to set SMART Goals – don’t frustrate yourself, setting SMART goals just makes sense!

S – Specific (or Significant)

M – Measurable (or Meaningful)

A – Attainable (or Action-Oriented)

R – Relevant (or Rewarding)

T – Time-bound (or Trackable)

ACCOUNTABILITY– If you really want to make something happen, start a business, get healthy, clean-up your act; ask a trusted friend or family member to hold you accountable. Tell them what you have in mind, let them know you need the support and you believe that with their help you will make PROGRESS toward what it is you want to achieve. Ask them to check in with you, be ready to be honest, thank them for their time and in between them checking in on you, CELEBRATE small success with them, and thank that person for their time and investment in you.

CHALLENGE YOURSELF – Get out of your comfort zone, set goals that require you to take BRAVE and BOLD steps; volunteer to earn experience in an area that will help you to grow your career. Take a class or an online course, read self-help books; knowledge is power and once you have it, now one can take it away from you.

FORGIVENESS – if someone is, or even if it’s YOU, are standing in the way of moving forward, because of hurts or guilt, take the step to forgive. Forgiveness, and the ABILITY to do so, will allow you to move ahead, to take steps forward, and move past whatever it is that is holding you back or blocking your path to success. Forgiveness and the DECISION to do so, is for you and you alone, not for anyone else. Forgiveness is for YOU, stop holding yourself captive, take that step and choose to forgive; lighten the load you are bearing and start your way onto a new and exciting path.

KEEP SCORE – how are you doing? Check in frequently with yourself, make an appointment to go over your GOALS, add to them, reevaluate them and revise them. Set realistic goals and build on them; be specific, make sure they are attainable and once again, celebrate even the small SUCCESS! Set yourself up to reach your goals at a realistic pace, monitor that pace and make adjustments along the way.
